2017 ANZAP CONFERENCE

30 September – 1 October

Pre-Conference Workshops 28 and 29 September

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the ANZAP Conference. To celebrate this important occasion, we are planning to make our annual conference an extra special event this year, with the theme of “ANZAP Today”.

primus hotel sydney externalOur Conference venue this year is the Primus Hotel, one of Sydney’s finest examples of the art deco style, perfectly positioned in the Heart of Sydney in Pitt Street.  (Venue tba for workshops).

We propose to commence on Friday 29 September with pre-conference workshops followed by the conference itself on 30 September and 1 October and we will feature a selection of internationally renowned psychotherapists.

In acknowledgment of ANZAP’s history, those who were involved in the early days will talk about their role in establishing our organisation, and the development of the Conversational Model, while current practitioners will discuss the application of our therapeutic perspective in the community, referring to case studies when relevant.

We welcome our two international keynote guest speakers in addition to our own international speaker, Professor Russell Meares.  Professor Meares will remind us of the contribution made by Dr Robert Hobson to the Conversational Model.

Also presenting will be Professor Else Guthrie who is Professor of Psychological Medicine and Medical Psychotherapy at University of Manchester and a disciple of Dr Robert Hobson.  Professor Guthrie retains an interest in psychotherapy research, and is currently involved in a research programme investigating the relationship between long term illness, psychological factors and care seeking behaviour.

In addition, we will also be looking at the political, environmental and social challenges faced by therapists today and this theme will be taken up by Jungian analyst and Professor of Jungian Studies at the University of Essex, Andrew Samuels who has written extensively on this subject.

In addition to inviting papers relevant to the title of the conference “ANZAP Today”, the ANZAP Conference Committee invites practitioners who are working with people from marginalised communities to share their experiences and skills, for example, some people from our indigenous society and our refugees.  The conference would like to open a discussion on this group and how the psychotherapy community might address some of their issues. We particularly encourage newer graduates trained in the CM model to share their experiences.

There are of course many methods of helping people with complex presentations and it is helpful to be informed of other approaches being offered in the community so please consider presenting.
